Natural healing factors

Terme Dobrna thermal water

Thermal water in Dobrna has been closely linked to the spa tradition of the area for centuries. Its beneficial properties were already known in the past, and through the development of the spa, it has become one of the key natural healing factors of Terme Dobrna.

Today, thermal water is primarily used as support in spa treatment, rehabilitation, preventive programmes, and relaxation. It holds a special place in the treatment of gynaecological and urological problems, diseases and injuries of the musculoskeletal system, rheumatic diseases, and certain neurological and vascular conditions.

Dobrna thermal water is alkaline and has a temperature of approximately 35 to 36.5 °C at the source. It contains naturally occurring minerals, including calcium, magnesium, and hydrogen carbonate, which make it an important part of numerous therapeutic and wellness programmes at Terme Dobrna.

It is used in thermal baths, rehabilitation procedures, and programmes for strengthening the body, improving well-being, and psychophysical condition.

Dobrna natural thermal water contains minerals that give it its characteristic properties and an important role in the spa offer. Key ingredients include calcium, magnesium, and hydrogen carbonate, which, together with the natural water temperature, create the conditions for its use for therapeutic, preventive, and relaxation purposes.

Beneficial effects of thermal water on the body

Terme Dobrna thermal water is an important natural healing factor used in various health, rehabilitation, and wellness programs. Its beneficial effects are primarily related to the natural water temperature and the content of minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and hydrogen carbonate.

Regular use of thermal water can contribute to muscle relaxation, better well-being, body regeneration, and support in various forms of spa treatment. It also plays an important role in skin care and programmes for improving psychophysical condition.

Study of Terme Dobrna thermal water led by Assoc. Prof. Tomaž Velnar

The skin is daily exposed to numerous external influences, so its ability to regenerate is key for maintaining a healthy appearance and protective function. Natural factors, including mineral and thermal water, can also play an important role in this process.

Research shows that mineral water can have a beneficial effect on the skin, which is why it has long been an important part of various forms of spa and balneological therapies. Skin contact with thermal water can support regeneration processes and contribute to soothing the skin and reducing the feeling of discomfort.

The study of Terme Dobrna thermal water, conducted under the leadership of Assoc. Prof. Tomaž Velnar, examines the influence of Dobrna thermal water on skin cells and its role in the regeneration and maintenance of healthy skin.

History

Slovenia is rich in natural thermal and mineral waters, and Terme Dobrna boasts the longest spa tradition in Slovenia. The use of Dobrna thermal water for healing purposes has been documented since 1403.

Terme Dobrna thermal water has a special mineral composition and an important place in spa treatment, rehabilitation, and preventive programmes. Its beneficial effects are associated with the content of numerous naturally occurring minerals and elements, including calcium, sodium, magnesium, potassium, zinc, copper, iron, sulfate, and hydrogen carbonate.

Dobrna thermal water is used as support in the treatment of various health problems, including in the fields of gynaecology, urology, neurology, diseases of the musculoskeletal system, and certain metabolic and vascular conditions. It can also contribute to relaxation, regeneration, and the improvement of general psychophysical well-being.

At Terme Dobrna, it is primarily used for thermal baths and various therapeutic procedures, and the spring water is also used for drinking within appropriately guided programmes.

Effects of mineral and thermal waters on the skin

Skin cells, especially keratinocytes and fibroblasts, play an important role in the renewal and maintenance of healthy skin. Minerals and other naturally occurring substances in thermal water, upon contact with the skin, affect its upper layers and can support natural regeneration processes.

Research on cell cultures shows that mineral and thermal waters can stimulate the proliferation of skin cells, support healing processes, and contribute to skin renewal and protection against certain factors associated with skin aging.

The beneficial effects of mineral waters are not limited only to the skin. Their use is also associated with supporting the functioning of the immune system, blood vessels, and respiratory system, as well as with various forms of rehabilitation.

Therefore, mineral and thermal waters are used in preventive, therapeutic, and rehabilitation programmes, especially for certain inflammatory and degenerative conditions of the skin and joints, and for certain metabolic, vascular, and respiratory problems.

Results of testing water from Dobrna springs

The influence of Terme Dobrna mineral water on skin cells was researched in 2019 under laboratory conditions at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Maribor, in the cell culture laboratory of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences.

In the study, natural mineral water from the spring in the Health Spa House was tested on cell cultures of two important types of skin cells: keratinocytes and fibroblasts. Ultrapure water was used for comparison, and cell growth and viability were monitored under controlled laboratory conditions.

The results showed that Terme Dobrna mineral water had a statistically significant positive influence on the growth of keratinocytes and fibroblasts under in vitro conditions. The effect was dependent on the concentration of water in the culture medium.

The findings thus indicate that the composition of Dobrna mineral water can favorably influence processes related to the growth and renewal of skin cells. Similar effects of mineral and thermal waters have also been shown by some other studies on cell cultures.

The results represent an important professional starting point for further research into the influence of Terme Dobrna thermal water on the skin and its use in preventive, care, and support programmes.

Fango

Fango is a natural inorganic peloid based on bentonite, a volcanic rock, which is prepared at Terme Dobrna in combination with thermal water.

Heated to approximately 40 to 45 °C, it acts primarily through heat and mechanical effect. The heat helps to relax muscles, it stimulates local circulation, and supports natural tissue regeneration processes.

Fango is used in the form of mud wraps and mud baths, primarily as support for problems with muscles, joints, the spine, and the lower back, as well as for certain rheumatic diseases.

Due to its thermal effect, it stimulates sweating and body relaxation, and it represents an important part of the spa, rehabilitation, and wellness programmes at Terme Dobrna.

Peat

Peat is a natural organic peloid formed by the long-term decomposition of plant remains. At Terme Dobrna, it is used in the form of baths as one of the natural healing factors.

Mixed with water and heated to approximately 40 to 45 °C, it acts primarily through heat, mechanical effect, and natural composition. The heat helps to relax muscles and joints, it stimulates circulation, and supports natural regeneration and metabolism processes.

Peat baths are used primarily as support for reduced joint mobility and for pain of rheumatic and degenerative origin. Due to the thermal effect, they can also contribute to body relaxation, better well-being, and increased mobility.

At Terme Dobrna, peat is part of selected spa and rehabilitation programmes, where it is used in combination with other natural healing factors.
